HINDU ELECTIONAL ASTROLOGY — A Handbook of Vedic System of Muhurt Jyotish Recently V K Shridhar has authored Hindu Electional Astrology (2nd edition 2021) in two volumes. It is the largest book on astrology having 1609 pages in two volumes. It is Published by M/s Suvaas Publishers, India. The first edition of this title — a compendium of Vedic Muhurtas — was the bestseller in the books on the subject in India for the last two decades. Need was felt by the author to expand its contents to upgrade it to the status of “Handbook” of electional astrology — the best known branch of astrology. A completely revised, improved & enlarged version is hereby presented extensively citing references from the treatises. New topics on Antidotes & Blockades, the Moon, and Tara have been added along with a chapter on ‘Guide to select Muhurt’. Most of the chapters have been extensively reviewed & matter expanded to meet the requirements of a handbook, detailing prescriptions for over 300 Muhurtas of significant & life activities. For ease in understanding and to facilitate in preparing elections with lesser computations, the matter has been illustrated through 450 numbers of tables & diagrams, and over 50 Chakras. Over 230 numbers of ‘Special Yogas’ applicable to various Muhurtas have been compiled for delight of students of astrology. First volume of the book contains description of electional elements, and second volume contains prescriptions for Muhurtas & astrological database. Exhaustive index shall help in culling out the contents with ease from the voluminous book. It is a compendium and reference book on Hindu Electional Astrology available for the delight of those who are interested in Vedic Electional (MUHURTHA) astrology. Electional astrology is the most useful branch of Vedic / Indian astrology which has withstood test of the time for the last over two millenniums. The fundamental three ingredients viz, prescriptive, preventive & predictive; of a knowledge are covered in this branch of Vedic astrology, gifted by our sages having divine vision.


Muhurt has emanated from Vedas, Shaastras, Puraanas, Shrutis, Smritis, scriptures, and other canonical, religious & mythological holy books. Perhaps there is no Hindu religious granth where Muhurt has not been referred to. “Vasist Samhita” is the oldest known treatise on Muhurt blessed to us many millenniums before Christ. Western electional astrology is of recent origin & is still under infant stage using arbitrarily derived rules/ principles from their ancient horary astrology. The author has done commendable job in compiling with extensive quoting the sources.
